You’ve booked your personal branding shoot — or maybe you’re still deciding if now is the right time — and one big question keeps coming up:
How do I actually prepare for a branding photoshoot?
First things first: take a deep breath. This does not have to be stressful.
I’m Maria Vasserman, branding photographer and founder of MS VISION, and I’ve helped dozens of Toronto entrepreneurs, creatives, and small business owners show up confidently on camera — even when they swore they were “not photogenic.” This guide is designed to take the pressure off and give you a clear, supportive plan so you can walk into your branding shoot feeling prepared, relaxed, and excited.
Whether you’re refreshing your website, leveling up your social media presence, or launching a new offer, this post will walk you through exactly how to prepare for a branding photoshoot — from brand clarity and outfit planning to mindset and shoot-day logistics.
Why preparation matters for a branding photoshoot
A branding photoshoot is different from a standard portrait session. Brand photography is strategic — it’s not just about looking good, it’s about communicating who you are, what you do, and how you help people.
When you prepare intentionally, your images:
- Feel aligned with your brand values
- Attract the right clients
- Work seamlessly across your website and social media
- Save you time and stress later
Preparation doesn’t mean perfection. It simply means making thoughtful choices ahead of time so the shoot itself can feel easy and natural.
1. Get clear on your brand vibe
Before we even pick up the camera, we start with your brand.
Not just what you do — but how you want people to feel when they interact with you.
Ask yourself:
- Are you bold and energetic or calm and intentional?
- Playful and quirky or minimal and refined?
- Warm and approachable or sleek and high-end?
We’ll define your:
- Brand personality
- Brand words
- Visual style
- Ideal client energy
From there, we’ll often create a Pinterest board or shared moodboard that captures:
- Inspiration images
- Posing styles
- Lighting preferences
- Locations
- Wardrobe ideas
- Brand colors
This visual direction helps guide every creative decision — from your outfits to your poses to the overall tone of the branding shoot. It also ensures your images feel cohesive and intentional, not random.
2. Build a smart shot list
One of the biggest mistakes people make with brand photography is showing up without a plan for how the images will be used.
Before your session, we’ll create a shot list based on your business goals. This helps us make sure you walk away with images you’ll actually use.
Your shot list might include:
- Website hero images
- Lifestyle portraits for your About page
- Content for social media posts and stories
- Behind-the-scenes brand photography
- Flat lays or detail shots
- Vertical images for Instagram and Reels
Knowing this in advance helps us choose:
- The right locations
- The best outfits
- The most effective poses and compositions
This is where brand photography becomes a powerful business tool, not just a pretty experience.
3. Choose outfits intentionally (not randomly)
You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe for your branding photoshoot. You do need outfits that feel aligned with your brand and make you feel comfortable.
I typically recommend bringing 3–5 outfits, such as:
- A casual, everyday look
- A polished or professional outfit
- A bold or fun look that shows personality
- A neutral base with layers or accessories
When choosing outfits, keep these tips in mind:
- Stick to your brand colors or complementary tones
- Prioritize good fit over trends
- Avoid heavy logos or busy patterns
- Choose textures (knits, denim, linen) for visual interest
- Try everything on beforehand
If something feels uncomfortable or awkward, it will show on camera. Feeling comfortable is one of the most important parts of preparing for a branding shoot.
If you’re unsure, don’t worry — as your branding photographer, I’ll guide you through outfit selection and share examples from past client sessions to help you decide.
4. Pick the right location for your brand
Your location plays a huge role in the story your images tell.
Ask yourself:
- Where does my brand naturally live?
- Where do I feel most like myself?
- What environment supports my work?
Some popular options include:
- A bright photography studio
- A cozy home office
- A local café or creative space
- Urban streets or minimalist backdrops
I’ve photographed branding shoots all across Toronto and help clients choose locations that align with both their brand and comfort level. I also have a curated list of trusted studios (like Light Studio) and hidden gem rentals I regularly recommend.
The goal is to choose a space that enhances your brand photography — not distracts from it.
5. Bring simple, meaningful props
Props help add context and personality to your branding photoshoot. You don’t need a lot — just items that make sense for your small business.
Examples include:
- Your laptop, tablet, or phone
- Books, notebooks, or planners
- Tools of your trade (camera, brushes, products)
- Branded packaging or client materials
- Personal touches like coffee mugs, candles, or flowers
We’ll keep props intentional and uncluttered so your images still feel clean and elevated.
6. Prep your mindset (this matters more than you think)
Here’s something I want you to hear clearly:
You don’t need to feel confident before the shoot.
That’s literally what the branding shoot is for.
Feeling nervous, awkward, or unsure is completely normal — especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera. My job as your branding photographer is to guide you through posing, expressions, movement, and flow so you never feel stuck or self-conscious.
You won’t need to worry about:
- Where to put your hands
- How to stand
- What to do with your face
I’ll coach you every step of the way — with encouragement, clear direction, and yes, probably a few jokes.
Your only job is to show up as yourself.
7. Pack your shoot bag the night before
Preparing ahead of time helps you arrive calm and focused.
I recommend packing:
- Outfits on hangers (with accessories)
- Makeup for touch-ups
- Hairbrush or styling tools
- Water and snacks
- Props
- Comfortable shoes for walking between locations
Feeling prepared makes a huge difference in how relaxed and confident you feel on shoot day.
You don’t have to do this alone
At MS VISION, my goal is to make your branding photoshoot feel supported, intentional, and genuinely enjoyable.
From brand clarity and planning to location scouting and final image delivery, I’m here to guide you through the entire process — especially if this is your first time investing in brand photography.
Together, we’ll create strategic, beautiful images that help you show up consistently across your website and social media, attract aligned clients, and feel proud of how your brand looks online.
